In the Limelight: Cake Couture

This morning we’re dreaming of all things sweet and delicious, thanks to this feature on one of Edmonton’s premiere cake boutiques. Annie Dam is the owner and cake designer of Cake Couture – a quaint shop in Edmonton’s west end that creates some of the most beautiful and unique cakes and cupcakes. We have worked with Annie and her team on numerous occasions and we’re always excited to see how her cakes will complement our wedding designs.

Tell us about Cake Couture.

Cake Couture is a high quality cake boutique located in Edmonton, specializing in the design and creation of unique and delicious cakes and cupcakes for all occasions.

Inspired and created in Europe, Cake Couture uses its French and Spanish artistic flair to bring you amazing personalized cakes with special attention to detail – from conception to beautiful execution.

Cake Couture strives to offer our high quality products to everyone: from cupcakes made with classic buttercream to please the little ones, to elaborate sculpted and novelty cakes for the more sophisticated crowd.

Whether you are looking for a traditional wedding cake, or something a bit more unconventional, we can create it for you. A work of art for any style and occasion, from an informal birthday party to the most formal of personal or corporate events.

What is your experience in the industry?

Annie Dam is the owner and cake designer of Cake Couture. After receiving a Science degree at the University of Alberta, Annie travelled to the south of France on a scholarship to teach English. After 3 years in France, her travels took her to Spain where she lived for 5 years. During her years abroad, Annie had the opportunity to develop her real passion: combining art with her love for baking. As Annie perfected her style and learned new techniques in Europe, her work recognition grew, and so did the list of clients.

She has written about cake decoration for a range of publications and has had her wedding cakes and cupcakes featured in blogs and magazines around the world. Annie published her first book in 2011, Cake Couture: Modern Sugar-craft for the Stylish Baker.

What are some of the upcoming cake trends that you’re excited about?

Working with more colours and textures. Also, couples are putting more and more personal touches in their cakes.

How far in advance should couples book you for their wedding cake?

We suggest that you book your wedding cake 6-8 months ahead of your special day as some popular dates fill up very fast. Our suggestion – do not leave it to the last minute. The earlier, the better.

Plan Your Wedding Edmonton Workshop at Matrix Hotel

On Sunday, February 3rd we held our first ever wedding planning workshop for brides, grooms and their special guests to enjoy a day of professional wedding planning guidance through a variety of topics. All participating brides received a planning folder complete with checklists, budget guides and valuable resources, as well as a gift bag with generous offers (valued at over $1,000!) from Edmonton area vendors.

Held in Matrix Hotel’s Amber Ballroom, the day flew by with lots of great questions and interactivity. A big thank you to our interns Kelsey and Suzanne for helping out all day!

Four distinct table designs were showcased with décor from Special Event Rentals, flowers from faBLOOMosity and stationery from Pinkpolka Wedding Design.

Tuscan Garden: rustic, earthy, warm and fresh with a palette of walnut, taupe, terracotta, ivory and natural greens

Modern Drama: bold, modern and linear with a palette of deep reds, purples, pewter and black

Traditional Elegance: formal and elegant with a palette of pewter, silver, white and blush

Edmonton Wedding Planner: Kristy + Joe

On Friday we shared a glimpse at the design board that inspired Kristy + Joe’s romantic Italian wedding. After spending some time with these two lovebirds, it’s obvious why romance was an important theme for their wedding, but they also wanted to put a modern spin on the traditional. To bring their vision to life we paired bold punches of colour with romantic elements – such as soft fluffy blooms, drapery and luxe fabrics.

Not only was this couple a perfect match on the inside, but they looked great together too! Kristy wore a beautiful ballgown with lace detailing and a sweetheart neckline. Joe rocked the ‘Bond’ look in a custom white and black tuxedo – it was so sharp and classic!

After the ceremony at St. Albert Parish, the wedding party travelled to the University of Alberta to take photos with the super-talented Kelsy Nielson Photographer before making their way to the reception at Santa Maria Goretti Centre. A delicious five-course Italian meal, heartfelt toasts and an awesome dance party rounded out this incredible day. Here’s the B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L bride on her way to the ceremony in a vintage car – could she look any more perfect?! You’ll notice that her accessories and hair change throughout the day (love a bride who is all about the details)!

The bridesmaids wore flowing floor length chiffon gowns (Dessy 2832) in varying shades of pink, purple and red. The stunning bouquets by Laurel’s On Whyte were a gorgeous blend of peonies, freesia, dendrobium orchids, dahlias, leptospermum and dusty miller. This combination was once again a perfect interpretation of modern romance and the ladies looked amazing!

The hall at Santa Maria Goretti Centre was fully draped and lit by Karin and her team at Site 6. Drapery adds so much romance to a room – not to mention, it covers undesirable finishes! The lighting added a modern punch of colour in complementary shades of pink and purple.

The tables were dressed with lavender linens and silver chair wraps. Ruffled charger plates topped with plum napkins and mirrored napkin rings were finished with a “bow” effect to continue the romantic theme. Kristy + Joe sat at a cozy sweetheart table covered in a gorgeous pewter dahlia overlay from Elegant Touches.

A comfy lounge area was flanked by two lucite bars that served Kristy + Joe’s signature cocktail, the Eternitini. The incredible dessert table was a nod to Kristy’s French heritage and included a macaron tower and croquembouche by Cake Couture, as well as numerous French pastries and sweets made with love by Kristy’s mother. Silver vintage frames were suspended above the table for added interest.

Kristy + Joe: You two were so wonderful to work with and I loved being a part of your journey to the altar. Wishing you all of the best life has to offer!
