Lighting at Wedding Receptions
Lighting instantly transforms the atmosphere of an event by enhancing the décor and evoking emotions through use of colour. Here are examples of some of our past weddings where lighting has been used. You will notice that the colour of lighting greatly impacts the essence of each wedding:
AMBER / GOLD LIGHTING: elegant, formal, traditional
BLUE LIGHTING: calm, cool, fresh
PINK LIGHTING: warm, fun, exotic
PURPLE LIGHTING: romantic, sophisticated, regal

Modern Holiday Party Design
Holiday celebrations can be festive without screaming clichés. In December we designed a modern lounge-inspired holiday party in Shaw Conference Centre’s Riverview Room (and there was no tinsel in sight)! Some of our favourite design details?
- All-white linens and chiavari chairs exuded understated elegance and allowed colourful accents to ‘pop’.
- Custom die-cut menu cards by Pinkpolka Wedding Design fit perfectly inside silver beaded glass charger plates.
- White perimeter drapery was accented with beautiful shades of pink and purple, while snowflake gobo lights added a textured glow to the ceiling.
- Centrepieces with red mokara orchids and purple lamp shades created a bold colour-blocking effect.
- Ruby votives by local company glass.ful doubled as décor and favours.
- The Three Waiters entertainment group were flown in to provide an experience that guests won’t soon forget. They discreetly blended in with Shaw’s serving staff until breaking out into a full-fledged musical performance!
Sharon Litchfield Photography did a beautiful job capturing the décor and details. {Special thanks to Jessica for assisting at this event!}

Edmonton Wedding Time Lapse
Earlier this summer we had the pleasure of designing and coordinating two events to celebrate Aanchal + Rajat’s marriage. I hope to share some gorgeous photos with you soon but for now here’s something new that we had fun experimenting with. We setup a time lapse camera at Edmonton’s Oasis Conference Centre to capture some of what goes on behind the scenes to prepare for an event. The video also captures the entire ceremony, so if you’ve never been to an East Indian wedding this is a must-see!
The speedy teams in the video include Jennifer Bergman Weddings, QSD Event Services, La Piazza Dasee and the Oasis staff. Décor from Elegant Touches and Special Event Rentals helped complete the gorgeous design of the event.

Transformation at Sawridge Inn Jasper
Searching for the perfect reception location can be overwhelming, and for many couples it is difficult to visualize a venue’s potential – especially when they have a particular look and style in mind for their big day. It’s easy to quickly dismiss venues because the walls and carpet don’t coordinate with your wedding colours; however, I’d encourage you to look beyond some of these minor details as nearly all spaces can be transformed!
One of the best ways to ensure your vision comes to life is by hiring a wedding planner/designer who shares your style. When we started planning Carolyn + Martin’s March 2011 wedding they told me they wanted their reception to look like a “modern winter wonderland,” and that rectangular tables, mirrored tabletops and blue/purple lighting were must-haves. Instead of getting hung up on aesthetics, we first found a venue that suited their desire for a Rocky Mountain wedding, accommodated their guest list and fit within their budget.
The Sawridge Inn & Conference Centre is a wonderful hotel in the heart of Jasper, Alberta. The Chief Paul Ballroom accommodates up to 210 guests for a wedding reception and features a gorgeous wooden dance floor in the centre of the room. The below promotional photo of the ballroom features wedding décor that is very traditional – the opposite of Carolyn + Martin’s chic, modern style…but just look at what we were able to do with the space…
With meticulously designed tables and spectacular lighting we achieved the Modern Winter Wonderland that Carolyn + Martin had envisioned!
The tables were dressed with luxurious, textured grey linens and topped with mirrored table runners which reflected the candlelight so beautifully. Tablescapes featured tall vases of curly willow sprayed white to mimic hor frost, glitter “snowballs” in silver julep cups and an abundance of votive and floating candles. Turquoise napkins added a pop of colour to the tables and the chairs were finished off with slate satin wraps. Here are a few more photos of the gorgeous space:
I hope this post inspires you to think outside the box when evaluating spaces for your own wedding. If a venue meets your requirements for capacity, location, food and budget, don’t be so quick to dismiss it just because the carpet is off-putting!

Featured On Style Me Pretty!
It’s been a busy month! In addition to helping three amazing couples get married this October, I had the privilege of working with an all-star team of vendors to design a stylized shoot…which, to our excitement, is featured on Style Me Pretty today!
Jenelle Gartner (owner of PinkPolka Wedding Design) and I had been itching to work together on a shoot for a while, and when the fabulous Radelle from Eternal Reflections Photography mentioned she wanted to do a shoot in the fall, we met for lattes and got started! Bringing Janine and James from La Piazza Dasee on board was the obvious next step – the florals and rustic table details are exquisite! Visit the Style Me Pretty feature here to see the stunning images and read about how it all came together.
Millions of thanks to the talented vendors who contributed to the shoot!

Teacup Décor
An eclectic mix of teacups, saucers and teapots make super cute centrepieces for a bridal shower. Fill the cups with fresh flowers or candy, then add a vintage lace table runner to complete the look!

Country Wedding Idea: Hay Bale Seating
A recent consultation with a client inspired this post. The couple is getting married on the groom’s family’s acreage this summer, and they are incorporating a lot of homespun country touches. Fruit-filled pies and jellies, a late-night bonfire for roasting s’mores, and of course, it wouldn’t be a country wedding without hay!
Hay bales used in place of chairs for the ceremony or an outdoor tent reception creates such a rustic feel. You can even create a super cool lounge area by stacking the bales like a couch – simply add some throw pillows, a few cozy blankets in your wedding colours, and voila!
Have a wonderful weekend!
