Wedding Trend: Metallics + Sequins

A trend that has emerged from the Art Deco influence we’re seeing this year is the use of metallics and sequins in wedding details and décor. Touches of sparkle and shine add an element of glamour and opulence to your wedding, enhancing the occasion’s formality and timelessness.

Pairing metallics with a neutral colour palette is glamorous without being overdone. For a more bold look, add a dash of sparkle to a colourful palette. Mixing metallics? Absolutely – we love this! Don’t be afraid to combine various tones such as a brassy gold with rich pewter or rose gold combined with copper.

Here’s some shiny wedding inspiration to brighten your Monday!

Wedding Trend: Art Deco

A noticeable trend this year in design – whether in fashion, interiors or events – is a return to the rich colours, bold geometric shapes and lavish ornamentation of the Art Deco era. We’re even seeing this on the big screen with this weekend’s release of one of the most highly anticipated films of 2013, The Great Gatsby.

Whether you’d like to incorporate a few touches from the era or have a completely Art Deco themed wedding, here’s some eye candy for inspiration!

The Special Event Show 2013

Last month I attended The Special Event Show in Chicago, IL. In addition to numerous educational seminars and networking opportunities (read: nightly social events!), there was a lot of design inspiration which is what I’d like to share with you today.

This first table design is one of my favourites – glamorous yet streamlined with a palette of black, gold and a pop of emerald, Pantone’s colour of the year.

I love the multi-layered centrepieces featured below:

This room by Kehoe Designs (shown below with the exception of the cake) was a highlight for me. Every detail was carefully thought out and the overall result was timeless elegance at its best.

Ombre Floral Table Runner

This ombré floral table runner made a huge statement! It would be perfect for a ‘wow’-factor head table. Below, this colourful floral wall was so much fun to see in person and it smelled amazing!

Pink Ombré Wedding Inspiration Board

Ombré: shaded or graduated in tone.

Last year we saw the ombré trend emerge in hair styles and fashion, and now the wedding scene is following suit with delectable ombré details from flowers and invitations to cakes and gowns.

That being said, some celebrity weddings incorporated ombré nearly a decade ago. Gwen Stefani wore a pink ombré wedding dress in 2002, and Trista and Ryan Sutter followed suit in 2003 when they wed after meeting on The Bachelorette – guests sat on pink ombré chair covers at the beautiful outdoor ceremony in California.

A full-on ombré wedding might be a little much, but incorporating the gradient trend in one or two areas adds beautiful impact. Here’s some pink ombré wedding inspiration to take you into the weekend!

Royal Wedding Trends

Millions tuned in to witness the Royal Wedding of Catherine Middleton to Prince William – now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. As with Diana and Charles’ nuptials in 1981, there’s no doubt that the new generation of brides will draw inspiration from this modern fairytale wedding.

What trends can we expect to evolve from the wedding of the decade?

Royal Wedding Trends, Kate Wedding Dress

1. Gowns with Sleeves: Kate’s gorgeous gown, created by Sarah Burton of the Alexander McQueen fashion house, is a modern take on traditional designs. We’ll likely see brides begin to stray from the highly popular strapless gown and opt for capped or long sleeves, elegant lace detailing and classic silhouettes.

Royal Wedding Cake

2. Luxe White-on-White Cakes: Fiona Cairns and her team spent five weeks creating the gorgeous Royal Wedding Cake which was intricately decorated with the couple’s new royal cipher and over 900 delicate sugar-paste flowers. The monotone colour palette perfectly highlights the detailed work creating a striking showpiece.

Royal Wedding Car, Getaway Car

3. Fun Getaway Cars: In a lighthearted moment following their lunchtime wedding reception, the newlyweds drove Prince Charles’ 1969 Aston Martin Volante to Clarence House. The car was decorated with balloons, ribbon and a fun license plate rumoured to be the work of Prince Harry. Following the Royal Wedding, perhaps we’ll see a surge of unique transportation and a return to classic car decoration.

Kate Wedding Hair Style, Pippa Middleton Hair

4. Half-Up, Half-Down Do’s: Both Kate and her Maid of Honour, Pippa Middleton, wore their long brown locks half-up, half-down with gorgeous soft curls framing their faces. Kate’s trusted personal hair stylists Richard Ward and James Pryce coined her wedding day hairstyle the demi-chignon.

Royal Wedding Hats, Princess Beatrice Hat

5. Fashionable Heads: The British tradition of ladies donning hats to weddings is from the days where a woman always wore a hat to church. At the Royal Wedding we saw women of all ages making fashion statements with their head wear. I would love to see Canadian Mothers of the Bride and Groom begin to embrace this tradition and wear fabulous hats or fascinators to their childrens’ weddings!

6. Tech-Savvy Weddings: Wedding websites have skyrocketed in popularity over the last few years and it’s likely we’ll see a lot more technology integration at weddings. From providing updates on the Official Royal Wedding Website to streaming videos of their nuptials on YouTube, Kate + Will ensured their wedding was accessible to people around the globe.

Royal Wedding Engagement Ring, Kate Ring, Diana Ring

7. Coloured Stone Engagement Rings: When Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton with his mother’s dazzling oval, 18-carat blue sapphire and white diamond ring, he unknowingly sparked a trend in the wedding world. Since the engagement in November 2010 we have already seen a surge in popularity of coloured stone rings in various shapes and sizes and this trend will likely continue for the next couple of years.

Pippa Middleton Dress, Royal Wedding Bridesmaids

8. All-White Bridal Party Attire: Pippa Middleton dropped jaws with her fitted white dress (also made by Burton) and dramatic, low-cut cowl-neck. It’s likely we’ll see more bridal parties in white or ivory attire to compliment the bride’s gown.

Westminster Abbey Trees, Royal Wedding Trees

9. Organic Décor: Westminster Abbey was decorated with lush florals and foliage in white, green and cream. This organic ceremony décor and neutral colour palette reflects Kate + Will’s love for the English countryside and will no doubt be replicated by couples who share a similar passion for the outdoors. Bringing natural elements inside offers an understated alternative to traditional wedding ceremony décor.
