Kickinghorse Winter Wedding: Sarah + Andrew
Sarah + Andrew decided on a winter destination wedding with an intimate guest list of their loved ones. And if you’re going to get married in the winter, what’s more romantic than getting married on top of a snow-covered mountain?!
Kickinghorse Resort in Golden, B.C. was the perfect setting to host their nuptials. There are numerous accommodation options at the base of the resort, so you can basically hop on a lift within minutes outside your door. When it came time for the wedding, guests did just that! In the late afternoon, they took the gondola up to Eagle’s Eye Restaurant where Sarah + Andrew exchanged vows in front of a beautiful stone fireplace and their beloved pup, Bella.
This wedding was such an honour to be a part of as I’ve known Andrew and his entire family since I was 8. It was incredible to see him find the love of his life in Sarah, and I must say he’s a very lucky man! These gorgeous images by Sharon Litchfield capture the essence of the weekend so well – enjoy this peek into Sarah + Andrew’s love story.

Victoria Wedding Planner: Nikki + David
Nikki + David’s wedding was held at Hatley Castle in Victoria, B.C., which is where many famous movies and TV shows have been filmed, including X-Men and Deadpool. The property and gardens are absolutely stunning – it was truly a fairytale setting.
This wedding was full of unique and personal details stemming from our very creative Bride. One big “first” for us was the feline flower girl. “Catsie” travelled all the way from Edmonton to Victoria to star as Nikki + Dav’s flower girl. Not only did she wear a dress, but she was pushed down the aisle by the Ring Bearer in a flower-covered pram!
After the ceremony guests enjoyed refreshments and were able to walk around and take in the gardens. There were tours of the castle offered, lawn games, and a cocktail reception on the terrace complete with a live jazz band, vintage lounge seating and a cigar bar.
Nikki designed all the stationery herself, including fan programs for the ceremony and escort cards hung from mini bottles of La Marca Prosecco which doubled as guest favours. A 5-tier cheese wheel cake adorned with grapes and figs took the place of a traditional wedding cake.
Featured in the current issue of Blush Magazine, this unique Victoria destination wedding is not to be missed!

Destination I Do: Scottsdale, Arizona
While we’re based in Edmonton, Alberta, we’ve had the pleasure of planning and designing weddings in many beautiful destinations – both in Canada and abroad! This series showcases some of our favourite locations including information for couples considering a wedding away from home.

Destination ‘I Do’ Wedding Series: Scottsdale, Arizona
Arizona is a popular vacation and winter home destination for many Albertans – why not celebrate your wedding in the warm, dry heat with spectacular sunsets and stunning desert backdrops?!
Why Scottsdale?
- Fly direct to Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport from both Edmonton and Calgary.
- Rain is rarely a concern, and temperatures are warm year round.
- The venue options are plentiful. Choose from luxury resorts, golf & country clubs, outdoor gardens and more.
- Your guests won’t run out of things to do – Scottsdale boasts more spas per capita than any other city in the USA, and there are over 200 golf courses in the area. The city also has a vibrant nightlife scene and desert hiking via Camelback Mountain or Pinnacle Peak Park.
Our Canadian summers are always so busy as people try to pack in trips to the lake, yard work, camping and ALL the weddings. We love the idea of getting married in a warm destination during shoulder season months like October, November, March and April. Your guests will love it too, as they’ll get to escape the cold winter!
Paula + Sheldon’s Scottsdale destination wedding was the winner of the 2014 Canadian Event Industry Star Award for Best Wedding and was also featured on Style Me Pretty. Their venue – Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North – offered a gorgeous, natural setting with southwest charm while providing the 5-star amenities and service that the Four Seasons brand is known for.

Vernon Wedding Planner: Christie + Nav
After visiting Sparkling Hill Resort shortly after it opened, I knew we had to do a wedding there – and when Christie + Nav came to us wanting a B.C. destination wedding, it was the perfect fit.
One of the most easy-going couples we’ve met, Christie + Nav wanted their wedding weekend to be stress-free so they could relax and enjoy celebrating with their most cherished family and friends. The wedding day was overcast but luckily the rain held off so we were able to take advantage of the stunning terrace overlooking Okanagan Lake. The sky was dramatic and beautiful, making for some amazing photos during the ceremony.
Tailored Fit Films put together this beautiful ‘Same Day Edit’ film which was played at the reception, and Kevin Trowbridge did such an incredible job capturing the day. Enjoy!

Best Wedding Dessert Tables
Dessert tables have been a popular feature at wedding receptions over the past few years. This trend began with candy tables and has evolved to include a couple’s favourite sweets and desserts, such as doughnuts, cookies, cupcakes and pies. We’ve also done frozen yogurt and ice cream bars, custom chocolate truffle stations and popcorn displays!
Why do we love this trend?
- Sweet tables are a great way to personalize your reception, showcasing your tastes as a couple. Think out-of-the-box to your childhood favourites or desserts from your heritage.
- Use a dessert bar to reflect your reception design, adding an element of décor to the space.
- Rather than giving away individual guest favours, instead invest that budget in a fun dessert table that guests can enjoy all evening.
Here are some of our favourite sweet tables and dessert bars we’ve designed for JBW couples. Warning – do not view on an empty stomach!

Pemberton Wedding Planner: Aasttha + Prasann
There was something magical about Aasttha + Prasann’s wedding day. The warm sun, a serene calm in the air, the majestic beauty of North Arm Farm – perhaps something else, that can’t be explained. But the feeling of that day truly embodied Aasttha + Prasann’s beautiful personalities and the love they share.
Traditional East Indian wedding customs were blended with a laid-back, organic vibe in a truly picture-perfect setting. North Arm Farm is a hidden gem of a venue, tucked away in Pemberton, B.C. – a short drive north of Whistler.
My words won’t do this day justice, but luckily you can read more about it in the Wedding Tales feature by Edmonton Journal, and you absolutely cannot miss watching this highlight film shot in Super 8mm film by Tomasz Wagner. It is such a perfect showcase of the day and the love that surrounds this special couple.

5 Things You Need to Know About Destination Weddings
Many people have the impression that destination weddings are easier and less stressful than planning a wedding at home – but that’s not always the case. Here are 5 important factors to consider when planning a destination wedding
1. YOUR GUESTS
Destination weddings ask a lot of your invitees: the cost of travel, of course, and depending on the location guests may have to take time off work to attend your nuptials. You’ll likely have friends or family who cannot attend or choose not to attend for various reasons. Be prepared for some loved ones to miss the occasion and don’t take it personally.
Tips:
-
- Provide accommodation options at different price points to suit a range of budgets.
- Setup a wedding website to convey travel information to your guests to make it easier for them to attend.
2. PLANNING FROM AFAR
If you have “Type A” tendencies, a destination wedding may not be a good fit! Unless you’re able to travel to the location before the wedding to scope out venues and meet with vendors in person, you may find it difficult to make all your plans remotely, especially when cultural differences and language barriers come into play. In some destinations it can take weeks to receive email responses – not every bride has the patience to deal with that pace of planning.
Tips:
- Do your research! Search for real photos from travel review sites or destination wedding blogs to avoid unwelcome surprises.
- Engage the services of a Wedding Planner experienced with weddings in the area.
3. BON VOYAGE BUDGET
It is a common belief that destination weddings are much cheaper than celebrating at home, however tropical resort packages can be deceiving as they are often for a very small number of guests and do not include a private reception.
A weak Canadian dollar can affect affordability of destinations abroad, so why not consider a beautiful destination closer to home? Canada boasts incredible locations throughout the Rocky Mountains, Okanagan Valley and West Coast.
Tips:
- Look off-resort for great local venues that will give you more flexibility in customizing your wedding and choosing your suppliers.
- Some locations may offer better rates for weekday and/or low season weddings.
4. THE UNEXPECTED
Destination weddings are more likely to be affected by factors beyond your control. Examples include extreme weather, such as hurricanes, snow storms, floods and forest fires (we’ve had weddings affected by all of the above); health outbreaks like Swine Flu and most recently, Zika Virus; and foreign political unrest.
Tips:
- If you’re heading somewhere tropical, check when that area is most likely to experience severe storms – in other words, don’t have your wedding during hurricane season!
- Look into getting traveller’s insurance and wedding cancellation insurance.
5. MAKING IT LEGAL
Each country has their own legal requirements for marriages. Some countries mandate blood tests and may require that you’re in the country for a specified number of days before the wedding takes place. In Canada and the U.S. marriage licenses are issued by province / state, so be sure to check the particulars for your wedding location.
Tip:
- Consider getting married legally at home shortly before or after your destination wedding, and have a symbolic ceremony abroad. This can look and feel exactly the same as a legal ceremony so your guests won’t know the difference – and you may save yourselves some headaches.

Lake Louise Wedding Planner: Erin + Adam
Living in Alberta, winter is something you must embrace, or you’re in for a long 5 – maybe 6, sometimes 7 – months! Erin and Adam chose to do just that by holding their February wedding in one of Canada’s most spectacular destination wedding locations: Lake Louise. Their two main priorities for the wedding were to extend the festivities over the course of an entire weekend, and to provide guests with a quintessential winter experience in the Canadian Rockies.
The weekend began Friday morning with a chartered motor coach driving Edmonton guests to The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Following a delicious rehearsal dinner in the Alpine Room, guests gathered for hot chocolate and s’mores by the lakeside fire pits and ice bar. On the morning of the wedding, Adam and his groomsmen hosted a pick-up hockey game on the frozen lake, while the ladies enjoyed a leisurely morning in their suite getting ready for the big day.
After exchanging vows in the Victoria Ballroom, the newlyweds went off for photos with their wedding party while guests departed on horse-drawn sleigh rides! Our team spent the next few hours transforming the ballroom with long wooden tables, lush greenery runners, tons of candlesticks and gold accents. The party continued in the Glacier Saloon where late night snacks including poutine and sliders were served, and dancing in hotel slippers went on until the early hours of the morning.
This truly stunning winter destination wedding is featured in the Spring / Summer 2017 issue of Weddingbells Magazine, so grab a copy and enjoy the images below captured by the very talented Brittany Esther Photography.
